Teaser Tuesday: Scarlet

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Books And A Beat. Scarlet, by Stephen R. Lawhead… You may recall that I talked about re-reading Hood (Book 1 of the King Raven Trilogy) not too long ago. Once again, I loved it. Lawhead sets the tale in Wales and in an earlier time period than our current translations—and gives a fantastic explanation of why he did so. He is one of the few writers who can wax lyrical without losing my interest. He writes beautifully: the people are fabulously characterized, the settings are beautiful. Rhapsodizing over one of the […]

Cover Candy #06

Cover Candy #6

There’s nothing like looking at some good Cover Candy to get me inspired to read! I have to be careful, or I’ll end up with even more books in my TBR Pile. The ones I’ve chosen this time are wildly different: gritty, whimsical, and classy. They’re all dark-colored (does that make a theme?). I like them for completely different reasons, but I find each of them intriguing. As usual, I can’t vouch for the contents of the books represented below. We’re only here for the eye candy! Teaser Tuesday: Children of Earth and Sky (2)

I am enjoying the depth of the setting. There are characters with story lines so different they couldn’t possibly cross. What, for instance, has the resentful new ambassador got to do with the orphaned, wannabe pirate raider girl? And what’s the duke going to do with the doctor? Or the artist? Of course, I must read on.

Short Story: Deliver Me

Deliver Me: A Short Story

Want to read a short story? Just the other day I wrote here on the blog about writer’s block, and it just so happens that I penned a short tale about that very subject a few years ago. I was poking through my files today when I ran across it and I thought, “Aha! Serendipity!” I hope you enjoy! If you like it, I would love to hear your feedback. Just leave a comment below, email me, or comment via Twitter or Facebook. DELIVER ME BY ROBIN LYTHGOE “Deliver me…” Such a small whisper couldn’t even begin to penetrate the […]

A Drift of Quills: Books We Love #5—“Books We Love” is a recurring topic for A Drift of Quills. Sometimes there’s a feast, and sometimes there’s a famine… Does that ever happen to you? Luckily, we’ve got a couple of tasty tidbits to whet your appetite!

Book Review: By Divine Right, by Patrick W. Carr

“By Divine Right,” the prequel to a longer series, starts out with a wonderful little mystery about the main character, Willet, then segues into a detailed description of the town — a little *too* detailed for my tastes, but hang in there, the story picks up after that in an entirely readable fantasy detective fashion. The real mystery is soon revealed as Willet follows his insatiable curiosity (and apprehension) in an attempt to discover who is stealing magical gifts.
