A Drift of Quills: Spring Thing

It’s time for a Spring Thing! A Drift of Quills are taking names and asking questions later. (Or, not!) We’ve each got FIVE favorite things about the season to share with you.

A Drift of Quills: Writerly thoughts by writerly folks

How do I decide on only five best things about spring? That’s like asking me to choose favorite children! If that’s the way we’re going, I’ve decided to keep the twins as one unit. Or the triplets, as it were. So, nyah. As I write this, I’m actually watching the grass grow outside my window. So exciting! But, I confess, I’d be happy if it got green quick, but got tall slow. While I love the smell of fresh cut grass, I’m not a huge fan of making it that way!

So here we go. MY top five(ish) favorite spring things:

  1. No more layers of sweaters (also, bare feet!)
  2. Longer, brighter days
  3. Spring cleaning Opening all the windows! Fresh air!
  4. Green leaves, bright flowers, and fresh veggies from the garden
  5. A sense of promise

It’s hard not to get excited about all the spring goodness going on. I’ve already dragged one of my lounge chairs out onto the deck and, well, lounged. We had a couple days of temperatures in the 70s; it would have been criminal to do otherwise. The birds have returned to the birdbath, and I had a visit from a (scaredy) cat there, too.

[www.robinlythgoe.com/blog]I started veggies indoors, and it’s so wonderful to see some of the seedlings already sprouting—it’s only been a few days! What’s even more amazing to me is that I actually feel like dealing with a vegetable garden this year. I simply didn’t have the brain space for it while I was taking care of my husband, and after that, well… The death of a spouse or partner literally changes every single thing in your world. I don’t think I’ve ever felt more up-and-down or back-and-forth in my entire life.

But hey. It’s Spring. I can be happy about that!

There’s a lot to love about spring on a farm, and of course there’s a lot of mud too…

It might be difficult to mention only five, as spring may well be my favorite season, but here goes!

Temperatures. Of course, the season springs on us (see the pun there?) in mid-March, and ends in mid-June. In my neck of woods, that means that the average temperature goes from 39/22 (H/L) to 77/59 (H/L)…
